Strepsils Intensive 8.75 mg – 16 Lozenges

Strepsils Intensive 8.75 mg is a medicinal product containing flurbiprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), formulated as a lozenge for the short-term symptomatic treatment of sore throat. Each lozenge contains 8.75 mg of flurbiprofen, which provides analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity directly while the lozenge dissolves in the mouth. The medicine is indicated for adults and children over 12 years of age.

Unlike traditional antiseptic throat lozenges, Strepsils Intensive contains an NSAID as its active ingredient. Flurbiprofen works by reducing the production of prostaglandins involved in pain and inflammation. This makes the product especially suitable when a sore throat is accompanied by inflammatory symptoms such as pain when swallowing and a swollen throat.

The official Polish patient leaflet states that Strepsils Intensive is intended for short-term symptomatic treatment of sore throat in adults and children over 12 years. The recommended dose is one lozenge every 3–6 hours as needed, with no more than 5 lozenges in 24 hours. Each lozenge should be sucked slowly, and its position in the mouth should be changed during use to reduce the chance of local irritation. Treatment should not continue for longer than 3 days unless a doctor recommends otherwise.

The product is available in several package sizes, including 8, 16, 24, 32 and 36 lozenges. The 16-lozenge package offers a convenient size for keeping at home or carrying for short-term use. The current registered product is a hard lozenge containing flurbiprofen as its sole active ingredient.

Research

• Clinical relief of acute sore throat
  A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 204 adults with acute pharyngitis found that repeated doses of 8.75 mg flurbiprofen lozenges produced significantly greater reductions in sore throat pain, difficulty swallowing and swollen-throat symptoms than placebo during the first 24 hours.
• Single-dose and short-term efficacy
  Earlier randomized research involving 301 patients found that a single 8.75 mg flurbiprofen lozenge significantly reduced throat soreness within 15 minutes, with effects maintained for at least 2 hours. Repeated dosing continued to provide symptomatic relief over the study period.
• Swollen and inflamed sore throat
  Another randomized study in adults with moderate-to-severe sore throat and visible throat inflammation found greater relief from pain, swallowing difficulty and the sensation of throat swelling with flurbiprofen 8.75 mg than with placebo.

How to Use

• Adults and children over 12 years: Slowly suck 1 lozenge every 3–6 hours as needed.
• Maximum dose: Do not exceed 5 lozenges in 24 hours.
• Administration: Allow the lozenge to dissolve slowly in the mouth.
• During use: Move the lozenge around the mouth while sucking it to help avoid local irritation.
• Children under 12: Do not use this medicine.
• Duration: Use for the shortest time necessary and do not continue for more than 3 days unless advised otherwise by a doctor.
• When to seek advice: Consult a doctor or pharmacist if symptoms do not improve, new symptoms appear, or signs of infection such as fever or worsening pain persist.

Important Information

• NSAID allergies: Do not use Strepsils Intensive if you are allergic to flurbiprofen, aspirin or other NSAIDs, or to any of the ingredients.
• Stomach ulcers: Do not use if you currently have or have previously had a stomach or duodenal ulcer.
• Previous NSAID reactions: Do not use if aspirin or another NSAID has previously caused symptoms such as asthma, breathing difficulty, nasal symptoms, swelling or rash.
• Gastrointestinal bleeding: Do not use in people with previous NSAID-related gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation or certain bleeding disorders.
• Do not combine with other NSAIDs: Strepsils Intensive should not be used together with other NSAIDs, including COX-2 inhibitors such as celecoxib.
• Heart, kidney or liver disease: It is contraindicated in severe heart, liver or kidney failure. People with cardiovascular, kidney or liver conditions should discuss use with a healthcare professional.
• Asthma and allergies: People with asthma or a history of allergic reactions should consult a doctor or pharmacist before using the medicine.
• Possible masking of infection: NSAIDs can reduce fever and pain and may mask signs of an infection. Persistent or worsening symptoms should be medically assessed.
• Pregnancy: Strepsils Intensive must not be used during the last 3 months of pregnancy. During the first 6 months, it should only be used if absolutely necessary and specifically recommended by a doctor.
• Breastfeeding: Consult a healthcare professional before use during breastfeeding.
• Alcohol: Alcohol can increase the risk of adverse effects, particularly gastrointestinal bleeding, and should be avoided during treatment.
• Drug interactions: Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners, antiplatelet medicines, SSRIs, blood-pressure medicines, diuretics, steroids, other NSAIDs, cardiac glycosides, cyclosporine, phenytoin, methotrexate, quinolone antibiotics, tacrolimus, zidovudine or lithium.
• Sugar content: Each conventional lozenge contains approximately 1.407 g sucrose and 1.069 g glucose, which should be considered by people with diabetes.
• Wheat and gluten: The product contains a very small amount of gluten from wheat starch in the glucose syrup and is described in the leaflet as suitable for people with coeliac disease, but it should not be used by people with wheat allergy other than coeliac disease.
• Sulfites: Sulfur dioxide may rarely cause serious hypersensitivity reactions or bronchospasm.
• Lemon flavor and BHA: Certain flavoring components may cause allergic reactions, while butylhydroxyanisole (E320) may cause local skin or mucosal irritation.
• Driving: The official leaflet states that Strepsils Intensive does not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
• Storage: Store below 25°C, protect from moisture and keep out of the sight and reach of children.
